When you start your weight-loss journey, many people tell you things that you now need to avoid or enjoy in moderation: chips, ice cream, pizza, coffee.
And coming from a coffee enthusiast and former barista, the last one was not happening.
Here are some tips to being able to drink your morning cup-a-joe and staying on your weight loss path.
1. Use less sweetener.
Like I said, I love my coffee and for the longest time, I was only really able to enjoy it with cream and sugar. But when I became a barista, I soon realized that “cream and sugar” means a lot of cream and a lot of sugar. I cut out sugar and never looked back (plus, I always say good coffee doesn’t need sugar). Next time you order, ask for less sugar or ask to leave it out so you can add it yourself. Treat me, once you get rid of the sugar, you’ll not only feel better but you won’t miss it.
Here is a hard fact: a cup of iced coffee without any additions is only 5 calories. If you go to Starbucks and get a venti iced coffee sweetened, they put 30 grams of sugar in it. What a rough note to start your day off with.
2. Size does matter.
I am stuck in the morning rush going to work but I have a little time to get some coffee. Heck, I need this cup of coffee to get through the morning. I go into the coffee shop and get a large iced coffee. I head off to work and by mid-morning, the ice has melted and it doesn’t taste good so I throw it away with a quarter of it still left. Save some money and calories by getting a size smaller and trust me, you won’t miss it.
3. Try different kinds of milk/cream.
The liquid you put in your coffee doesn’t make a huge difference. I personally still use half and half in my coffee but I don’t add any sugar. If you are looking to get some better value, opt for milk in your coffee instead. Some shops offer coconut and almond milk options which adds a little more flavor to your morning coffee and fewer calories.
4. Stop getting blended coffees and cappuccinos.
I admit – they are delicious. But they have so many calories in them and are absolutely no nutritional value. I very rarely crave one but when I do, cut the whipped cream and ask for it less sweet. Honestly, just skip them altogether if you have any weight loss goals. A healthy breakfast is crucial and that is the opposite of healthy. If you are craving a cold milky beverage – try a latte. It is has the flavor of a blended drink that isn’t blended.
5. Get tea instead.
A little off the beaten path for this, but I felt like it is an important trick. I used to be the person that would make a cup of coffee at home before I left and then finish it before I got to work on my commute. Instead of stopping and getting another coffee, I would get an iced tea (or just hot tea). It still has caffeine in it but it much better for you. Ask for a lot of lemon in it and it can even help regulate your body and speed up your metabolism which is great in the morning!
If you are an avid coffee lover like myself, giving it up is just something you aren’t willing to do. Use these tips to still enjoy that caffeine boost in the morning while still feeling good about yourself later!
